This is for [personal profile] aliax_alexandre! (Of course I'll be happy if it's also useful for someone else.) So, uh, this is a step-by-step tutorial how I draw braids, using only black and white ink on brown paper. Basically, this is how it goes:

Braid-Tutorial-Thingy

1) Draw a zigzag line
2) Elongate the ends of that line
3) Draw the general shape of the braid
4) Add some shading
5) Add some general untidiness
6) Add highlights

*grabs pencil and piece of paper*
*starts drawing*

... OMG, I have a braid O.O !

Two things:

1) I understand better which geometrical shapes I'm supposed to start with when explained this way. I knew about the zigzag line, but then it got... confusing. Now it's clear.

2) The shadows and highlights! I wasn't putting them in the right places. Well, I wasn't putting the shadows in the right places anyway, because I never used highlights before :P

Yay! Archeth, you're getting your braids tomorrow, hopefully.

And thank you so much, Eller, for taking the time to draw this! It's silly, but it was frustrating how not-braidy my braids looked :D

This is neat! And "add some general untidiness" may be good advice for many things... :D
