This is for
aliax_alexandre! (Of course I'll be happy if it's also useful for someone else.) So, uh, this is a step-by-step tutorial how I draw braids, using only black and white ink on brown paper. Basically, this is how it goes:

1) Draw a zigzag line
2) Elongate the ends of that line
3) Draw the general shape of the braid
4) Add some shading
5) Add some general untidiness
6) Add highlights

... OMG, I have a braid O.O !
Two things:
1) I understand better which geometrical shapes I'm supposed to start with when explained this way. I knew about the zigzag line, but then it got... confusing. Now it's clear.
2) The shadows and highlights! I wasn't putting them in the right places. Well, I wasn't putting the shadows in the right places anyway, because I never used highlights before :P
Yay! Archeth, you're getting your braids tomorrow, hopefully.
And thank you so much, Eller, for taking the time to draw this! It's silly, but it was frustrating how not-braidy my braids looked :D
