OC questionaire meme, found in the journal of [personal profile] yhlee. I decided to answer the questions for my characters Dev, Deeyan and Koh (because they appear most often in my stories) as well as Ruon (because he's in the story I'm currently working on, so I should think about his characterization more).

What genre of music do they listen to the most? Would people assume they would like that style of music or is it wildly unfitting to their appearance? (ie; cutesy pastel girl likes heavy metal)

Dev doesn't like noise so he won't listen to music voluntarily.

Deeyan enjoys instrumental solo music.

Koh likes music fine but wouldn't be able to identify a genre. He likes to move, though, so - anything that's good to dance to?

Ruon is literally a musician. He'll listen to absolutely anything - professional interest! He likes folk songs best, though.

I don't know about the appearance thing - none of them belong to any subcultures identifiable by fashion. They wear very different fashion styles, but none of them are tied in any way to musical preference.

In terms of power scaling in-universe, are they about as strong as everyone else, stupidly overpowered, extremely weak, etc?

Dev is... weaker than others would perceive him. He has a bit of (mostly useless) earth magic - but he's not the high-level necromancer the rumors are talking about. He's only dangerous because, well, he's best friends with Koh.

Deeyan is a pretty strong mage though she doesn't use her magic much and decides to focus on science instead. She's strong, though - and extremely smart, and willing to take risks, too.

Koh is, of course, stupidly overpowered. How very fortunate for the rest of the world that he doesn't actually take advantage of that, huh?

Ruon has zero magic... Zero visible magic, that is. All that weirdness just follows him around. :) I wouldn't want to mess with Ruon, though - of the four characters here, he's clearly the most dangerous. (He can use weapons, too.)

Their playlist. Drop their playlist (or, if it's extremely long, the most fitting songs on it) and include specific lyrics from each song you consider to be the most fitting. Explanation not required but you can if you feel like it! Do not care about cringe. It is fun.

They don't have playlists.

Make a moodboard and/or stimboard for them! Remember to source your images! (And preferably use a royalty-free image site such as Unsplash instead of Pinterest!)

Uh, no? I never understood the point of moodboards.

If their personality has changed drastically over development, what's something that was once true about them that is now absolutely absurd to imagine and false?

Actually, my characters just appear in my head the way they are... And don't change much, except for what happens to them in the stories.

When it comes to food, are they more into savoury, salty, sweet, sour, spicy etcetc food? Are they picky with their food or will they eat just about anything that isn't spoiled?

Dev is into bland food and a very picky eater. He won't eat food in strong colors, either! His favorite food is bread - without anything on it.

Deeyan is not picky but her favorite food is fresh fruit, especially apples.

Koh likes sweets.

Ruon will eat whatever. He's not picky.

In your opinion, do you think if they were real you would be friends with them or not?

Huh, that's actually an excellent question.

With Dev... Probably not. We could talk about rocks just fine, and he'd be interested in that, and he's only an asshole when people actively piss him off, so we'd be on good terms, but getting emotionally close to this guy? Difficult.

With Deeyan, yes, probably. She's perfectly nice, smart, and easy to get along with.

With Koh, yes - he's the kind of extravert who tries to make friends with anyone, so I'd have to actively fight against becoming his friend.

With Ruon... No, I don't think so. He's superficially charming and likeable, but I don't think he has friends.

- ^ Relating to above question, do they consider themself easy to get along with, and is that actually true?

Dev knows perfectly well he doesn't get along with most people.

Deeyan doesn't think about these things but is easy to get along with.

Koh considers himself friendly and easygoing, and I suppose he is, except most people don't want to wait and find out. (Hardly anyone likes random hugs from a demon!)

Ruon knows how to turn on the charm and considers that a necessary job skill... But no, Ruon being himself doesn't get along with people. At all.

Have you ever tried to make them in a character creator? If so, share pictures (if you have them)!

No, I just occasionally draw them, and even more often get fanart drawn of them by other people. I think I've linked enough of that all over my journal.

Do you have a voice claim for them?

O_O No.

What's their "theme" color? What color do you associate with them? Is it in their color scheme or just a color that reminds you of them?

Dev: Blue and yellow

Deeyan: Dark blue, bronze, and brown

Koh: Black, dark red, and gold

Ruon: moss green, ocher

In visual art, yes, those appear as their color schemes.

Would you consider them well-liked in universe, or are they more an... acquired taste .

Even without the necromancer reputation, Dev doesn't get along with people. That is... People are either scared of him or simply think he's a rude asshole.

Deeyan is not one of the super popular young ladies - she's too quiet for that - but she's certainly well-liked and doesn't make enemies.

Koh is a demon, enough said.

Ruon is popular and well-liked, but only because he doesn't get emotionally close to people.

- ^ What about outside of canon? Are they one of your more well-liked characters?

Dev is kind of polarizing my audience. He has some die-hard fans, which is actually quite amazing, while other listeners don't like him much. I can understand both positions.

Deeyan is... kind of underappreciated? I guess because she's one of the less controversial personalities. It's a shame because I like her a lot.

Koh is the most popular character, definitely. I didn't expect that, but listeners... really really like him?!? And, I mean, he's fun.

With Ruon, it's difficult to tell yet - I only have few stories with Ruon as main character yet, but those few were quite successful, so... I guess he has the potential to be a popular character.

What do they smell like? If unsure of specifics scent-wise, do they smell good, overly-soaked in perfume, like trash etcetc?

Dev stinks. Literally. He occasionally forgets to wash when Deeyan doesn't remind him.

Deeyan smells good, I suppose - soap and floral perfumes.

Koh... Occasionally sets stuff on fire, and I guess you'd smell that on him.

Ruon? I have no idea, except that his body hygiene is fine. He handles musical instruments often enough you'd probably smell wood on him, though. If you sniffed his hands... Which is a kind of creepy thought.

What would their theme song/leitmotif be titled? What would it sound like, if you have an idea?'

There is a Deeyan theme written by [personal profile] yhlee - I recommend you all listen to it because it's awesome. The others don't have their own music. Dev's leitmotif would be... The sound of a thrown book hitting the wall? And Ruon's... The first string on a drone zither? I'm not a composer, though. I simply have no idea.

Are they a projection of yourself in any way? How similar are they to you?

Dev has some superficial similarities - he's an autistic geoscientist. This occasionally confuses my audience into thinking he's some kind of self-insert. Other than that, we're very different personalities, though. For example, I'd like to think I'm considerably less neurotic. (I don't sort my books by color! LOL) I enjoy interacting with people. And I'm considerably more curious - if I discovered a portal into an alternate dimension, I wouldn't just designate it my office trashbin! Seriously, Dev is so disinterested in his surroundings that having him as a main character makes narration extremely difficult.

Deeyan got my tech nerd tendencies and my interest in science. Also, she's energetic, good at decision-making, and works best under pressure... So, that's similar, definitely... Though that's about it. Personality-wise, she's clearly much nicer than I am.

Koh is not like me at all - he's cuddly-cute, friendly, and has bit of an attention deficit. The only thing we share is the love for sparkle and glitter.

Ruon... Actually shares some of my worst character traits: a certain cynicism, lack of scruples, nasty humor, and an impressive talent at manipulation. He's more of an asshole than I am, though, no worries. XD He's a social chameleon, which means he's a much better actor than I am. (I tend to be more direct.) Also, he's depressed, which I'm not.

Are they capable of holding their own in a fight or are they laughably easy to beat?

Dev is not a fighter. You'd have to catch him without his best friend nearby, though.

Deeyan will not provoke a fight, but yes, she can definitely hold her own.

Koh is a ridiculously strong mage - if he loses a fight, that will only be due to his lack of focus.

Ruon is not a mage, but he can defend himself. Also, he's good with knives.

Do they swear often? On occasion? At All?

Dev technically doesn't swear - he's rude enough without trying.

Deeyan... Occasionally swears, I guess, but not particularly often.

Koh doesn't swear.

Ruon swears, but only when no one is listening.

How do they text people? Lots of exclamations? All lowercase? Very Serious And Grammatically Correct? 1 Billion Emojis? Cutesy uwu speak? Etc etc.

Obviously, these characters don't have phones, but...

Dev would send very short messages, all lowercase.

Deeyan would use more exclamation marks than strictly necessary.

If Koh managed to use a phone without setting it on fire (big if!), that would be the billion emojis.

Ruon would send grammatically correct, though not very serious, texts.

How easy is it to befriend them? How easy is it to make them hate you?

Befriending Dev is difficult - making him hate you also takes considerable effort. Dev is mostly just not interested in people. If you stay out of his way, he will extend the same courtesy to you.

Deeyan is easy to befriend. Just start a conversation about nerd stuff! She has a bit of a temper, but she will forget arguments after a short while, so making her hate you takes long-term efforts as well.

Koh is everyone's!!! bestest!!! friend!!! If you're not running in the opposite direction, that is.

Ruon is near-impossible to befriend. He will do the enemies-for-life thing if you really want, though.

How do they prefer to be referred to? First name, last name, nickname, another alias entirely etc?

Dev and Koh are nicknames, Deeyan and Ruon are first names. I'm almost sure Ruon is a fake first name, but hey.

Compared to the rest of your cast, are they tall or short?

Dev is on the tall side but not very much so. Koh is average sized for a guy. Deeyan is small-ish. Ruon is very tall.

Are they a dog or cat person? Neutral? Do they prefer another animal entirely?

Dev doesn't like to be around animals: they're noisy and move around. Ugh! He doesn't want to harm them, he just wants them to be somewhere else, please.

Deeyan is scientifically interested in bugs, though she likes animals in general.

Koh is a cat person! He loves cats!!! He will pet any stray cat he can find! (He lets them in Dev's room, too.)

Ruon is pretty neutral when it comes to animals. He likes to watch wild animals, and he likes birds (especially crows), but he strongly dislikes dogs.

Do they know what a sigma male is. Be honest.

WTF. XD

How do they react to being loved and/or cared for? Similarly, how do they express their love for others?

Dev actually enjoys having friends, though his way of expressing that is simply to seek out the other person's presence, or not kicking them out of his room. He even lets Koh hug him, though that's clearly the exception.

If you're friendly to Deeyan, she'll consider you her friend. Deeyan's way of caring about people is to... boss them around, I'm afraid. XD She's the kind of person who will drag her friends into weird adventures.

Koh is, unfortunately, very expressive - and a hugger. He will hug and cuddle people he likes.

Ruon is too cynical for this shit - he will wonder what you really want from him.

How do they react to being disliked? Similarly, how do they express their distaste for others?

Dev is used to being disliked, and doesn't care much - as long as he's left alone. If he's seriously annoyed, he will resort to... petty assholery, really.

Deeyan is usually a polite person, but she will explode when provoked.

Koh is usually confused when people don't like him. (He's so friendly - what's wrong?) He only reacts with violence when he or his friends are physically attacked. At that point, though, you're dead.

Ruon will deescalate with a friendly smile, but some time later, you will end up dead in an alleyway - or somewhere your body will never be found.

What Pokémon type(s) would they be?

I have no idea, I'm not into Pokémon...

Are they the type to be chaotic and reckless or are they more the type to think before they act?

Dev is a bit of an adrenaline junkie and enjoys extreme situations but will usually not actively provoke them. Also, he usually has some kind of plan.

Deeyan is not a fan of extreme situations but is energetic enough to constantly provoke them anyway.

Koh, of course, is pure impulsive chaos.

Ruon thinks before he acts, absolutely. There are a few exceptions to this rule, and they usually get him into trouble.

Are they an open book or hard to read emotions-wise?

Dev: Hard to read. He's not actively misleading people, but he doesn't always have the facial expressions appropriate for the situations he's in. This confuses people.

Deeyan is quite open.

Koh is also easy to read.

Ruon... actively misleads people. He's very good at that, too.

Can they keep a secret?

Dev: No. I mean, he doesn't talk much, so your secrets are still quite safe with him - but also, he's not good at deception, and if he doesn't understand why he should keep something from his friends, he'll likely just forget it was supposed to be a secret. Which means at least Deeyan and Koh will end up knowing.

Deeyan: Yes.

Koh: No. Keeping track of what you can and cannot say in a certain situation requires focus. He will not intentionally gossip about your deepest, darkest secrets, but they may slip out.

Ruon: Yes. You better not tell him anything that can be used against you, though.

What are some things you associate with them? Certain aesthetics, items, colors, feelings, tastes etc! Anything goes!

Dev: Libraries. The particular silence and air pressure in a mine. Woodchip wallpaper. Fluffy carpets. Tetrahedra. Aquamarine. Rainbows. The smell of fresh bread. Fern.

Deeyan: Apples. Old technical instruments. Spring rain. Stars. The smell of machine oil. The sound of a piano. Small flowers. Old scientific illustrations.

Koh: Sparkle. Gems. Explosions. Cats. The warmth of your bed when you should get up but really don't want to. The sound of drums. Wings. Hugs. The smell of burning fir branches.

Ruon: Fen landscapes. The sound of a lute. The smell of rosemary. Hoarfrost. The first impression of warmth when you open the door of an unknown place. Day lilies. Traveling. Wire.

What role do they serve in the story? Are they a main character, side character, antagonist, protagonist etc?

Since this is is a series of stories, they all appear sometimes as protagonists and sometimes as side characters.

What's the meaning behind their name?

None, actually. When I name characters, I tend to go with phoetics that I think suit them, and (these days) a basic internet check to make sure it doesn't mean something extremely rude in some language. (I'd prefer no meaning whatsoever, actually, but with all the world's languages that's near-impossible: if you don't want ridiculously long names, there are very few phonetic combinations that don't appear anywhere. I'll settle for "nothing that will shock anyone".) Oh, and Dev is short for Devon, which is a dumb geology joke really.

What inspired you to create them?

...they just exist? I mean, I'm a storyteller, so these people just all pop into existence? Dev showed up first in a commented program code (!), because I can't even do that without fictional characters appearing. LOL And I don't even remember when and how Koh appeared - but he was the first Kolthainn character and predates the stories by at least a decade.

...uh, no idea? If anyone has read this far, I'm happy to answer questions, of course.
