Just finished: One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad. I don't know what else to say about this scathing, perfect little book beyond that I wish I could make everyone in so-called Western civilization sit down in a chair with their eyes forced open, Clockwork Orange-style, until they'd read it. Until they make this atrocity fucking stop. It's one impassioned cry in the midst of genocide but it's a very powerful cry.

The Dragonfly Gambit, A.D. Sui. I have mixed feelings about this novella, which is a military sci-fi about a pilot, sidelined after a career-ending injury, who plots an elaborate revenge against the empire that blew up her planet. I first encountered the author at the same event where I first encountered Suzan Palumbo, and this could be a paired reading with her book Countess, only I read Countess first and preferred it. Which is not to say that this book isn't good, because it really is, but it's a bit inevitable to compare two anti-colonialist lesbian revenge fantasy space operas that end in tragedy that came out the same year, y'know?

My main criticism is that it suffers from the same issue that a lot of space opera suffers from, which is that there's a big universe and a limited cast of characters, doing all the things. The genre wants scrappy underdogs with interpersonal drama, but it also wants its protagonists in positions of power, which you can do in longer-form work but is challenging in a first-person novella. The Third Daughter is very hands-on, and it's implied that Mother is as well, but at least the former is ludicrously incompetent for someone running a massive empire. Which is to say that if you've blown up someone's planet, you probably shouldn't promote three young people, all of whom are childhood friends, from that planet into critical military positions. Especially if you're going to fuck at least two of them.

That said, I like the romance in this one more, if you can call it a romance; it's wonderfully toxic. And the ending is a gutpunch.

Currently reading: Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons From Marine Mammals by Alexis Pauline Gumbs. This continues to be excellent. One thing that I think is really cool about it, among the many things that are cool about it, is that she's decided to capitalize the word Black in all instances, not just where it applies to humans. Which has the intended effect of anthropomorphizing the creatures she writes about in a way that identifies them as the racialized Other, and thus part of the struggle for liberation. Look, this is poetry about marine biology, I'm going to basically love everything about it.

Lost Arc Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa. I just started this one last night but we have a future Lagos that is mostly underwater, save for five skyscrapers. Which is a cool enough concept that I'll overlook that the book starts with both a dream sequence and the main character dressing for work. I'm into the worldbuilding so far.

Happy Earth Day!

I've been under the weather. This time I managed to get Bronchitis just from the end of the winter heating season (unless a friend with a congestive heart condition was actually sick, and not just coughing because of the heart condition). But I think this was coming on earlier, and the med regime my former allergist suggested was keeping my lungs and sinuses a lot clearer than in the past, but not enough for my body to clear out the infection.

Well, I came to this conclusion Friday, with (among other things) singing at the Eurofilk showing me I was unusually short of breath for singing; I already had an appointment with my newish primary doc who I really like on Monday, and when I tried to call the allergist last month to set up an appointment, there was no answer or answering machine on his number, or on the alternate number I found on Google. I did find an article about him listing him as 81 years old, and I'm not sure how long ago that was written, so I'm assuming he died or retired. So, I waited out the weekend and got tireder and tireder, and shorter and shorter of breath.

Happily, she was willing to prescribe antibiotics and steroids (if I'd gotten antibiotics on Friday, that might have been enough), unhappily, when they figured out that the only way they could give me the meds the doc thought most appropriate that didn't have corn in it (kids' liquid, again), it turned out that the pharmacy couldn't fill it until today. It was too late to try to talk the doc into prescribing something different, as the clinic was closed.

So today I woke up way too early, and was NOT falling asleep again (my body does insist on waking when I really need meds, which freaked out my RN mother when I was first sick enough to always be awake when she came in to wake me up to take them). This was handy in that I was able to deal with a bank overdraft for my grown-up kid (she's still using the account I got her when she went to Denmark in 4th grade so I could easily transfer money to her if there was an unexpected need, so, being awake I saw the text notification) (Her birthday is later this month, so an early birthday gift was perfectly reasonable).

And then I had food and called the pharmacy, because I WANTED those meds before the rest of the day's errands, which included getting My Angel to her PT appointment, mailing a thing (in a post office, since there seems to be no more drop-off boxes outside our regular post office any more--WTF, government?--and going to pick up meds at a different pharmacy too.

The strip mall the post office was in had one of the closing JoAnne Fabrics, which had almost no fabric left, and not much of anything else either. I did find some things to buy, including two substantially marked down big bags designed to hold a sewing machine and sewing stuff, but which I plan to use one of for author stuff (books, display, etc.) on the assumption that I'll do signings at cons again, and the other for acrylic paints, brushes, and the like since my current bag and plastic bin plan isn't working out as well as I'd like, and because having that stuff on wheels will be very convenient.

I also got some beads, wire, a thimble and multitool, sewing machine needles, an ironing pad to put on a table, some tape, a couple of pillow forms for planned gifting, and, surprisingly, a basket of tumbled stones to put in the fishtank. Sadly, the heavy-duty dolly they had pictured in the front as available had already been sold. I looked at the jewelry making stuff, thought about the heavy duty crimper and some of those beads, but I haven't been making jewelry lately and can use the hemostats I use for holding autoharp strings to crimp things, so I left those behind. I did also get some very discounted project boards, so if we decide to go to one or more protests, we can take signs.

And I took photos of our daffodils in the middle of all that.

I am cheered by all the photos of protests I'm seeing, and by how badly Elon's car company is doing. It gives me hope. Keep contacting your elected officials, we've got to wear them down until they stand up to our very cruel and foolish leader.

Now I am going to hit post and go watch Rachel show all those pictures of the signs again, and do Duolinguo, so I don't miss a day, and fall in bed. Maybe I'll manage to post Daffodil pics tomorrow.

something happened today that i wanted to share and now i don't remember what it was. it's spring? but you knew that. i don't have an apartment yet, but you knew that too. i do however have a lot of leftover passover food. i have an entire unopened box of egg matzo. i should buy chocolate chips and make matzo crack.

we got new desk chairs at work and they are COM. FY. my back feels so supported.

My heart of silk
is filled with lights,
with lost bells,
with lilies and bees.
I will go very far,
farther than those hills,
farther than the seas,
close to the stars

This is a bit confusing as well as rapidly-moving plan that I have been sucked into. This is a figure of speech, and I do get pulled into these jobs from time to time, but I'm wondering about the longevity of this one.

After taxes I was making 60 grand a year in America.

With the background that I have I feel as though I am walking into a lion's den. Yesterday I asked if there were any restaurants that served sichuanese food on their island, but they told me one day I will fly directly to sichuan - which is a date and time unknown to me.

Day by day. Day by day.

This one was clearly ripped off the Ashley Madison hack, with a weird reference to Rohinie Bisesar (the woman who stabbed a stranger to death in the PATH Shoppers Drug Mart). The latter is even name-checked in the show, which I'm kind of surprised is legal.

The plot is needlessly convoluted. A hacker gets the database for Not!Ashley!Madison Dot Com, and appears to be blackmailing either the owner or someone in the database. People in the database include a well-regarded judge and a pastor of a megachurch. She's about to reveal the identity of someone in the database to her married best friend, but will only do it in person. They agree to meet in their usual spot in the PATH, but the hacker, who arrives first, is being followed. She makes her way to a Shoppers, where she's stabbed to death by a masked assailant.

Let's take a breath for poetry. It is April, and as good a time as any for a collaborative poetry fest. Please find below a starting stanza or two of a brand new haikai (what's a haikai, you ask? Think extended haiku: alternating stanzas of 5-7-5 and 7-7). Comment with a following stanza to build on that seed. Someone (most likely me) will respond with another stanza, and so on and so forth throughout the day.

"Real Science"

Title: "Real Science"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield
Pairing(s): None
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 985

Summary: Hex learns about science and why Ace loves it.

Notes: Written for the "chemistry" challenge (#257) at [community profile] fandomweekly.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: To be entirely honest, I wrote this in order to portray a scientist like they really are, as opposed to the stereotype we see everywhere in the media. Even though Ace loves explosives and explosions, she couldn't have gotten to the point of inventing nitro-9 and retaining a full set of limbs without rigorous preparation, attention to detail, and stringent safety protocols. So, she's verifying every last digit before starting to experiment; she's isolating her experiment in the right environment and even there, she's putting on safety glasses though they're not technically needed, and she's not allowing Hex to distract her from her work. She's not even wearing a white lab coat -- the things she's working on aren't going to splash on her regular clothes and ruin them, so she doesn't need one.

Yes, she really shouldn't drinking from lab glassware, but not because it's inherently dangerous (lab glassware needs to be very clean, because impurities will alter your experiments) -- it's because if you are working with other glassware, it's really easy to get your drink mixed up with your experiment. But, two things: 1) she wasn't working with any other liquids, and 2) chemists are also human and do stupid things like this. And it lampshaded the usual image everyone has of chemists, always working with vials of brightly colored liquid.

But, I'm still keeping with my story-per-month pace, even if some of them are stupidly short. I've been slaving over a WIP for a while now but it's been slow progress. Soon, I hope.

first, rip, pope francis. i always kinda liked him and thought he was reasonably progressive, for a pope. he legitimately always seemed like a genuinely decent guy.

second, pete hegseth was caught sharing classified military information in yet another signal chat, this time with his wife and his brother (among other people). because he is a dumbass who has no idea how to do his job. and! kristi noem, the head of homeland security, had her purse stolen at a restaurant - very secure there, ms noem - and said purse had inside it such things as her apartment keys (makes sense), her makeup bag (also makes sense), her passport (could conceivably make sense), and, er, $3000. in cash. which seems like the kind of money you carry around if you want to make a big purchase that you don't want anyone to be able to track. my question is: how did someone get close enough to her purse to steal it? she has secret service with her. we really are living in the stupidest timeline, seriously.

in happier news, i had today off on account of patriots day, which is marathon monday and also celebrates the battle of lexington which kicked off the revolutionary war. (reenactors gather on lexington green at ass o'clock in the morning to reenact the battle which i think is both really cool and kinda nuts.) the only states that celebrate are mass and maine. and it was mostly a nice day, even! i got a late start (partly because [livejournal.com profile] tamalinn called me before i could bestir myself out of the house, and then i had to tell her about sinners and try to figure out what besides black panther michael b jordan was in that she might have seen) and went to the diesel and had breakfast for lunch and wrote a bunch, most of it for a random thing that i don't know what to do with. i had to exorcise a scene out of my head, i guess. but it was productive! which is always good.

Yesterday it was still January and I drove home
and the roads were wet and the fields were wet
and a palette knife

had spread a slab of dark blue forestry across the hill.
A splashed white van appeared from a side road
then turned off and I drove on into the drab morning

which was mudded and plain and there was a kind of weary happiness
that nothing was trying to be anything much and nothing
was being suggested. I don’t know how else to explain

the calm of this grey wetness with hardly a glimmer of light or life,
only my car tyres swishing the lying water,
and the crows balanced and rocking on the windy lines.

Yesterday I had some "back and forth" with the people who are trying to bring me into the business.

To my surprise, they will not only cover my plane ticket to their island paradise, but also my wife's ticket. We won't need to pay for hotel accommodations either.

My wife has shown a bit of reluctance to travel to this island.

I mentioned this to some of my other constituents in cryptocurrency, they have somewhat sarcastically mentioned that I should be careful not to get kidnapped and forced to work at a scam factory.

Ironically enough, I just google searched this location that they are requesting me to travel to. A few cases of human trafficking seem to have begun from this location. It might be a good idea to make a dead man's switch and send it to a journalist friend of mine based in Taipei.

By no one's request, I have downloaded Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent season 2 so that I can watch it so you don't have to.

This one is bad. Like, I normally like my trash TV but it's possible for a pop culture product to be actively harmful and the season opener, "White Squirrel City," is definitely that. It's also an incredible microcosm of our cultural moment.

Which is to say, a few years ago the cops cleared a tent encampment at Bickford Park. Residents were violently displaced, their possessions confiscated, and either forced to go elsewhere, minus their belongings, or shoved into insufficient temporary shelter. This is a major cause of death for homeless people.* Then, to film the copaganda show, they set up a fake tent encampment in the same place where the city had evicted real ones.

So it's one of those situations where even if it had been Great Art, the price of creation would have been outweighed by the moral violation. That said, it's also bad art.

Here is an article from the excellent Grind magazine about all of the things wrong in this episode. The author says it better than I could, and also points out its most egregious flaws, leaving me to nitpick and mock the minor ones.

Thought I'd post some flowers to break up the politics! Here's me, who used to get all my news from destiel memes on tumblr, now following three substack blogs. But I figure when you're living through History, best to pay at least some attention. And even here in NZ we have right wing bastards in government trying to fuck things up. Wrote my first email to my MP, Health Minister, Labour & the Greens protesting a recent directive ordering our Health Service to refer to all pregnant people as "pregnant women". Tossers. Hope you're all looking after yourselves out there.

As predicted, the weather finally ended our almost-drought with a LOT of rain. And thunder and lightning, and some floods and slips but not where I live now (whew). At my old place in the bush we'd definitely have had power cuts but these days I can just listen to the pounding rain and crackling thunder and relax.

The autumn garden's losing many of its flowers and going a bit wild, but I've planted a bunch of seeds which might grow and eventually flower, what with Auckland having weird subtropical weather. We'll see. Also, it's time for violas again! I love violas and pansies with their many colours and little faces.

The tithonia (Mexican sunflower) beside my dalek compost bin is literally taller than the house. Possibly a world record! People keep offering to cut it back for me (neighbour, and the heat pump maintenance guy although it's not menacing the outside unit) but last year it produced huge plate-sized yellow daisies in May so I'm hanging in there for those to reappear (1 so far, hopefully many more). Makes it a little tricky to park my car but I can sort of nudge it in underneath the triffid. Here's the evidence!

happy easter to them what celebrate, and to them what don't a lovely and restful sunday. today was beautiful like yesterday but a tch colder so after zoom with the fam (during which my sister defended the sixteen comic book boxes under my bed when my mom wondered why i didn't go through them and get rid of some of them), grocery store (which was not crowded because easter), and lunch (i sat on the front porch for like twenty minutes and then went inside because my feet were cold), i put on shoes and a jacket and went Out. and sat in the sun (sort of) and read my book and drank my iced chai and tried vainly to ignore the fact that i should have worn more clothes. but it was SO NICE. i mean, it's spring.

and then i came home and read some more and made dinner (as passover is now over i can eat bread but instead i had, uh, matzo brei which is basically scrambed eggs with farfel) (ok and also a red bean bread i got at h-mart) (i was going to go out for dinner with my sister but did i mention it's easter? and almost everything is closed) and watched an episode of andor s1 with the confab discord in preparation for s2 which starts on TUESDAY. we haven't caught up yet. if you haven't seen andor i highly recommend it. it's kind of harsh but really well done and diego luna is exceptionally cute. also it has stellan skarsgard and he's always worth watching.

On the edge of another blue world
the lake looms like salvation. Over
coffee, my mom and tía speak excitedly

about the vibrant villages along the shore,
how you can only get there by boat
across the lake’s beautiful depths, how

the volcanos stand piously over the water,
how each village is named for one of the twelve
apostles. I ask, with complete sincerity,

if that means one is named for Judas.
The waitress brings our food. My mom
and tía eat slowly with side-eyes and silence.

Sometimes I can't tell if I'm Jason Bourne or James Bond.

For about the past week or so, a contact that I have asked me if I was interested in a cryptocurrency job. I've been trying to get out of crypto for a long time. I was invited to a Whatsapp group with my contact and two of his friends. I posted in the group now and then. But when I was at the airport heading to another place. I dropped a photo wishing them a good weekend and mentioning I was in the capital. They asked me if I could go to an island where they own hotels, beaches and casinos at the drop of a dime. They joked that I shouldn't bring my wife with me because they have girls who might show an interest in me after a few drinks. They invited me so spontaneously that one of them was willing to show up at a hotel near the airport and take me their island resort the next day. I refused because my wife wasn't with me.

I had a private phone call with my primary contact, expressed a few concerns, he reassured me that nothing that could endanger my marriage would take place.

So, it seems we are going to have an extended vacation to a tropical paradise after the 24th. We came here to get some things done.

Today is a designated relax day. And we finally have a chance to see a film I've always wanted to see: The Amateur. After that, hopefully we'll get a nice American delicacy known as "Taco Bell."

Busy day at my parents' house today. I tried a new recipe on them and it was a hit.I also made them ham, sauteed asparagus and corn. I always try to give them lots of veggies.

I did a lot of little jobs (changing light bulbs, cleaning, packing up things they want to donate, etc.) and then I also cut down 4 biggish trash trees, chopped them up, and put them in the green waste bin.
